Last week started out as a wind-down week for all who participated in the North American hide market. With the Chinese and most of the other Asian tanners shutting down or preparing to shut down for their Lunar New Year holidays, things were bound to slow. Offerings from U.S. raw and wet blue hide suppliers went out as normal last Monday and Tuesday. The majority of those offer lists contained fewer-than-normal items/selections/quantities, with shipment periods far out. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 27, 2020
The Hide Market Report – January 20, 2020
Activity in the U.S. hide market continued to be brisk last week, following in the footsteps of the previous week, in which we saw a decent amount of business booked. Things started off slowly, with suppliers getting their offering lists out on Monday and Tuesday as usual, and tanners reacting with a good number of bids on Wednesday and Thursday. By Thursday, we did see tanners from multiple countries in the market making bids on U.S. raw and wet blue hides. But, few those bids … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 20, 2020
The Hide Market Report – January 13, 2020
Business in the U.S. hide market picked up a bit last week after a rather slow New Year’s holiday-shortened week. Buyer interest was spread over a good number of destination countries, an encouraging fact to suppliers. The interest was pretty much across the board, meaning for all selections. After the normal back and forth between buyers and sellers, one asking for higher prices and the other bidding lower than the last traded level, some business was put together. Sale … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 13, 2020
The Hide Market Report – January 6, 2020
With New Year’s Day falling on Wednesday last week, the amount of business that was put together on U.S. raw and wet blue hides was lower than normal. Suppliers put out their hide offer lists early in the week, which contained fewer selections and fewer quantities than the prior week’s lists. Tanners responses to those offerings, like the offer lists themselves, were also limited. By the end of the week, sellers and buyers did get together to put a limited amount of business on … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 6, 2020
The Hide Market Report – December 30, 2019
Last week was Christmas week and a slow one for business here in the U.S. with the hide market being no exception. With many suppliers out of their offices for at least part of the week, if not the entire week, the amount of business put together was quite limited. However, to our knowledge, the sale prices on the U.S. raw and wet blue hides that were traded were done levels steady or slightly higher than last traded prices. The week started out with U.S. hide suppliers putting … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 30, 2019
The Hide Market Report – December 23, 2019
We can’t say exactly what created more interest in U.S. Branded Cow hides, but the interest was there last week. All involved in the hide and leather business know that the FOB plant value of some of the Branded Cow hide productions has been, for months, below processing costs. Over the last couple of weeks tanners have come into the market and as a result raised the FOB plant value of those Branded Cow hides up to breakeven levels. The U.S. hide market was active last week, … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 23, 2019

Don’t know where the strength in the Branded Cow hide value is coming from but it was there last week. All involved in the hide and leather business know that the FOB plant value of a Branded Cow hide has been, for what seems like a year now, below its processing costs. But, over the last couple of weeks tanners have come into the market and raised the FOB plant value of the Southwester Branded Cow hides up to a breakeven level. the hthe We are going to call … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 16, 2019
The Hide Market Report – December 9, 2019
Oddly, the sales of U.S. raw and wet blue cattle hides seemed to slow down a little last week, when compared with the prior week. While one would have expected the opposite to be the case, since the prior week was a holiday-shortened one. Last week started with most suppliers showing fewer selections on their weekly offering lists. Dairy Steer and Cow hides were noticeably absent from most offer lists. Sellers, in many cases, were saying they were sold further ahead … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 9, 2019
The Hide Market Report – December 2, 2019
Last week was a short one here in the U.S. since last Thursday was a national holiday, our Thanksgiving Day. Several U.S. hide suppliers did not bother to put out offer lists last week, and other suppliers had short lists. This, we believe, was mostly a function of last being a short week. On top of the holiday, a strong early-season snowstorm reduced the work week at many of the western and mid-western cattle slaughter plants. Despite these happenings, the FIS was not … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 2, 2019
The Hide Market Report – November 25, 2019
U.S. Steer hide suppliers sold enough product last week to keep market prices basically unchanged. The number of tanners bidding would suggest that those Steer hide producers could have sold much more than a week’s production if they were interested in accepting the many bids that were at steady or lower than last traded levels. But suppliers did not accept these lower prices. U.S. Cow hide suppliers were in the same situation as the U.S. Steer hide suppliers. There were … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 25, 2019
