The U.S. hide market was quieter last week than suppliers had hoped. There were a good number of bids made by tanners on the Steer/Heifer hide selections and for all Cow hide selections. However, most of those bids remained at levels unattractive to U.S. suppliers, as they have been for the past 3 weeks. There was some business put together on U.S. Steer hides last week but, from what we could tell, that business was limited and was done at prices that were down by at least $1.00 per piece … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – April 10, 2017

The Hide Market Report – April 3, 201
Most of those who attended the Asian Pacific Leather Fair in Hong Kong last week will be returning to their offices this week. Though many U.S. raw hide and wet blue marketers may not have sold large quantities last week, they did find a fair amount of interest in their products. The only reason for any supplier not moving product was because the prices they were being bid were not to their liking. The U.S Steer hides that were sold, were done at levels $1.00 to $2.00 lower than their … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – April 3, 201
The Hide Market Report – March 27, 2017
Last week was another slow-grind, as sellers and buyers still could not come together in agreement on prices. Some tanners finally showed a willingness to put in bids, although they were in some cases as much as $4.00 below last sales prices. It goes without saying that none of those very low bids were considered, but those tanners who were willing to start their bids within $2.00 of last week’s prices were successful in procuring some hides, that we still believe they need, at $1.00 down. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – March 27, 2017
The Hide Market Report – March 20, 2017
The hide market last week continued to move along slowly, with tanners and suppliers having a hard time coming to a consensus as to where the hide market currently stands. From the tanner’s side, they can only see that their finished leather price cannot support these higher raw material prices that they have seen since the beginning of the year. On the side of the supplier, it can be said that the actual market price is steady with no change in prices. The reason for that is twofold, … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – March 20, 2017
The Hide Market Report – March 13, 2017
Another week came and went with no big volume sales for U.S. raw and wet blue hide sellers. Last week’s activity in the U.S. hide market, particularly the Steer hide market, pretty much mirrored the last several weeks. Don’t get us wrong, there was some business put together, but not at quantities near a week’s production. There was decent demand for Heavy Native Steer hides and Butt Branded Steer hides, some were traded at steady money and some may have been sold at slightly lower levels, … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – March 13, 2017
The Hide Market Report – March 6, 2017
Last week came and went without the big week of sales that we anticipated for the U.S. raw hide and wet blue markets. Based on the number of bids in the market last week, we can say that tanners in all the major markets for U.S. Steer hides were interested in buying some raw material. But for the most part, they were not interested in paying U.S. suppliers’ asking prices for those Steer hides. Although there were some isolated cases where producers received small price increases for certain … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – March 6, 2017
The Hide Market Report – February 27, 2017
It appears things picked up a bit in the U.S. Cattle hide market last week, though it was not the big week we were anticipating numbers-wise. Maybe packers, processors, and traders did not have combined sales equal to a week’s production, but it was a decent week of trading. In the process, sellers of U.S. Steer hides could hold prices steady and in a few cases, on certain heavy average selections, they could get buyers to pay as much as $1.00 per piece higher. At the same time, sellers of … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 27, 2017
The Hide Market Report – February 20, 2017
Trading in the U.S. Steer hide market was not robust last week. We expected Asian tanner to be active buyers last week, but that was not the case. The information we got from China and Korea was that tanners in both countries were in the process finalizing some leather orders, but prices and quantity of those orders were still up in the air. Without knowing those most-important details, tanners were not in a position to enter the raw material market to cover these yet-to-be leather orders. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 20, 2017
The Hide Market Report – February 13, 2017
Most, if not all, the Asian tanners were back to work full-bore last week. But, their presence in the market did not move the needle on prices for U.S. Cattle hides much, if at all. The feeling we were left with, as last week came to a close, was that a fair number of hides were traded last week, but not a normal week’s production. The interest and sales were made to larger number of destination countries than we had seen for some time, which we view as a positive for the market. For the … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 13, 2017
The Hide Market Report – February 6, 2017
With many Asian tanners gone from their offices for a good portion of last week sales of U.S. raw and wet blue hides were noticeably reduced. By Thursday and Friday enough buyers were in the market to make it interesting, but a larger percentage of those bids came from tanners located outside of China. Korea, Europe and Mexico were in the market and purchased many hides before weeks’ end. Many of the bids for U.S. Steer hides came in lower than their last traded levels, but we do not think … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 6, 2017
