With many of the Asian tanners slipping into a holiday mood last week, trading of U.S. raw and wet blue cattle hides seemed to have slowed down. We do not believe that sellers, as a whole, were able to move a full week’s production of either their raw or wet blue material. Although there were not a lot of trades consummated, some selections, notably Big Packer and equivalent Heavy Native, Butt Branded, and Colorado Branded Steer hides, were reported to have been sold at higher price levels. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 30, 2017

The Hide Market Report – January 23, 2017
Things slowed down noticeably for the U.S. hide market last week. The Chinese tanners slowed down their raw material buying in preparation for their New Year’s shutdown. Most of the Chinese tanners will close their factories this week, and will stay closed for anywhere between one to four weeks. The length of their holiday closures will differ depending on where they are located, their size, how busy they may be, etc. It was indicated by the USDA in their Export Sales Reports that over 60 … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 23, 2017

THE HIDE MARKET – JANUARY 16, 2017 The U.S. hide market remained basically steady for the all the U.S. Plump Steer/Heifer selections last week. While the values of seemingly all the Cow hide selection edged higher during the week. It really seems unusual to us that the U.S. Plump Steer prices have remained steady for as long as they have. One would have to think part of the reason for this would be that we went through the yearend holidays in the U.S. which reduced market activity, … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 16, 2017
The Hide Market Report – January 9, 2017
Last week was a short but busy one for U.S. Cow hide sellers. Numerous tanners were in the market last week to buy U.S. Cow hides, and the interest covered all selections. Be it Dairy Cow hides and Plump Native Cow hides for ladies shoes, handbags, or furniture upholstery leathers, or be it Plump Branded Cow hides for the auto upholstery tanners- U.S. Cow hides were in great demand. For sure U.S. Cow hide suppliers sold more hides last week than they had expected to sell in what was … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 9, 2017
The Hide Market Report – January 3, 2017
Things were busier than we had expected for the U.S. Market last week. We thought we would see a lack of activity due not only to the fact that last week was a holiday shortened week, but also because a number of the individuals responsible for raw and wet blue hide sales at their companies were out of their offices. However, there were a good number of tanners in the market looking to buy some raw material, and placed bids with suppliers. The majority of the opening bids that were … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 3, 2017

THE HIDE MARKET – DECEMBER 19, 2016 Far and away, the majority of bids from Asian tanners last week on U.S. Plump Steer hides were at levels down $1.00 to $2.00 per hide from sales made the week before last. As a result, the number of Plump Steer hide sales made was less than a week’s production. The final sale prices for some of the U.S. Plump Steer hide selections finished the week down a dollar from their previous week’s closing values. However, there were some Plump Steer hide sales made … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 19, 2016
The Hide Market Report – December 12, 2016
Lots of rumors and claims have been thrown around about a large volume of hides and wet blues being traded by U.S. hide sellers traveling in Asia last week. Rumor also has it that some of those trades, mostly Steer hide selections, were being done at price levels that would be called at least $2.00 or more under last traded levels. Again, those were rumors and the truth will be known eventually. It seemed there were a decent number of hides sold from supplier’s offices here, and … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 12, 2016
The Hide Market Report – December 5, 2016
With everyone in the U.S.A. back to work last week after the Thanksgiving Holiday shortened week, the volume of sales in the U.S. hide market moved up considerably. Did suppliers sell a week’s production? It seemed as though U.S. Cow hide and Holstein Steer hide producers were able to sell what they wanted. The Plump Steer and Heifer hide producers, even with the number of sales they were able to book, most likely were not able to market a week’s production. There were a number of U.S. hide … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 5, 2016
The Hide Market Report – November 21, 2016
The U.S. dollar was stronger, U.S. cattle slaughter was up last week, numerous tanners continued to complain of poor leather orders, and the holidays are rapidly approaching. Couple all that with the uncertainty as to how the Trump presidency will affect international trade, and you can understand why the U.S. hide market was for the most part inactive last week. There were bids from tanners for U.S. Steer and Cow hides throughout last week, but they were fewer than they had been, and many … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 21, 2016
The Hide Market Report – November 14, 2016
The big news last week was the results of Tuesday’s U.S. Presidential election. It was a big surprise which many did not expect when Mr. Trump was named the winner. While the election results sent financial markets outside of the U.S. scrambling, we slept here in the U.S. Things settled down a bit when trading opened at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday morning, and stocks moved higher. As the week progressed, the U.S. dollar strengthened against all major currencies. The financial … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 14, 2016
