The trading levels last week for U.S. Steer hides remained unchanged, while the trading volume slowed slightly. U.S. Cow hide sellers were able to move prices up slightly on some selections, but for the most part, Cow hide prices also remained steady. The main reasons for the slowdown in U.S. Steer hide sales was that suppliers turned down any bids that were less than steady as they remained well sold ahead on all selections, excluding some of the Jumbo weight selections. Tanners continued to … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 7, 2016

The Hide Market Report – October 31, 2016
As expected, things slowed in the U.S. Hide Market last week. While the number of hides offered by suppliers decreased, and the number of orders from tanners was reduced, the sale prices for the product traded either remained at steady levels or moved slightly higher. Lower grading selections such as Branded Cow, Renderer, and Number Three hides struggled, but did maintain their prices levels. It was the Big Packer Steer hide selections, and the more sought after Dairy Cow hide productions, … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 31, 2016
The Hide Market Report – October 24, 2016
Busy, busy, busy- that is the only way we can describe last week’s U.S. hide market. From start to finish, tanners and U.S. hide suppliers were going back and forth with offers, bids, counters, and re-counters, while finally coming together on a good amount of business. From what we saw, sale prices last week for both Steer and Cow hides advanced anywhere from $1.00 to $1.50 per piece. Where the week prior to last was a very active one for booking business, last week’s sales were also … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 24, 2016

From all reports, the 37th Annual Meeting of the United States Hide Skin & Leather Association held in Chicago last Thursday and Friday went off well. All in attendance said the program put together by Association President Mr. Stephen Sothmann, was well received. Many felt the presentations by guest speakers were informative, in particular the one made by Mr. Kevin Good, the Senior Market Analyst at CattleFax regarding cattle supply going forward. Although it might have been … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 3, 2016
The Hide Market Report – September 26, 2016
Coming off a better-than-expected week, many felt that the table was set for a good round of business. Suppliers had offer lists that were populated with various items, but it was apparent by the prices they offered that all suppliers felt the market is on very solid ground. Tanners still showed strong resistance to any price increases. In fact, some tanners went away completely if a supplier tried to raise the price even USD0.50. This was not the norm, however, as most tanners … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 26, 2016
The Hide Market Report – September 19, 2016
The market got off to a slow start last week, then on Wednesday Korea closed for the week to take their Harvest holidays, and on Thursday China shutdown for their Mid-Autumn Festival. That, for the most part, closed the offices of 80 percent of the buyers of U.S. raw hides, skins and wet blue leather. We expected very limited sales would transpire last week. However these holidays did not stop sales to both Korea and China all that much. After all, every raw material buyer, no matter where … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 19, 2016
The Hide Market Report – September 12, 2016
Last week was a holiday shortened week here in the U.S., with last Monday being “Labor Day” one of our national holidays. Most everyone who had been in Shanghai the prior week for the ACLE was back in their office by last Tuesday. The report from those who attended the show was that the ACLE was slower than expected, but still well worth attending. Most attendees with whom we have communicated, be they raw material supplier or tanner, stated that their company would for certain be … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 12, 2016
The Hide Market Report – September 5, 2016
Most all reports are in and the conclusion is that there is only one way to describe last week’s All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in Shanghai, and that is QUIET. The consensus was that there were fewer attendees and fewer patrons and visitors at the show this year than last. However, many feel that this show was still far better for the hide and leather industries, than the Asian Pacific Leather Fair that is held annually in Hong Kong at the end of March. The number of hides and wet blue … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 5, 2016
The Hide Market Report – August 22, 2016
The U.S. hide market was rather active last week. Going into the week we were expecting interest from the tanner-side to be reduced from the prior week, but in the end we found that not to be the case. As for the business done we are calling the sale prices for basically all of the U.S. Steer hide selections steady with the prior week’s levels. The tanners who were in the market last week were not the same tanners who were buying the prior week. It seems to us that hide prices have … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – August 22, 2016

THE HIDE MARKET – AUGUST 15, 2016 The activity in the U.S. hide market started slowly last week, but things really picked up by the end of the week. The main objective for U.S. hide suppliers was to put a bottom in the market. Although it cannot be said that the market bottomed out last week, suppliers did feel that the bottom was much closer by weeks end. While U.S. Steer and Heifer hide prices dropped down another $1.00 last week, producers reported that they sold what could be called … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – August 15, 2016
