After a pretty good run over the last 4-6 weeks, activity in the U.S. Hide Market slowed last week. For weeks prior to last, there were a good number of U.S. raw and wet blue hides sold by suppliers. That run of business had been verified by the recent Export Sales numbers which are released by the USDA weekly. A good portion of those recent sales are attributed to the Chinese shoe leather tanners as they have been working their way through their annual, historically, busy … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 18, 2019

The Hide Market Report – November 11, 2019
Last week started with U.S. Raw and Wet Blue hide suppliers putting out their offer lists as they normally do on Monday or Tuesday. The asking prices on those lists did not change very much, if at all, from the levels they have been for weeks now. The one thing that was noticeable last week was the absence of Holstein Steer hides on most suppliers’ offering lists. It became apparent during the week that suppliers are very oversold on Dairy Steers. Also noticeable … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 11, 2019
The Hide Market Report – November 4, 2019
Last week was yet another week which contained plenty of activity in the U.S. hide market. The offer lists put out by suppliers early in the week contained a good amount of product. The only selection noticeably absent on those lists were Holstein Steer hides. Any bids which were not up to last traded levels were then countered by producers. By weeks end, as has been the case for what feels like month now, a good amount of sales was put on the books at steady money or … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 4, 2019
The Hide Market Report – October 14, 2019
We expected activity in the U.S. Cattle hide market to pick up last week, and it did to a small degree, but we did not see as much trading as we thought would take place. Most of the European tanners, raw material suppliers, and others who exhibited at or attended the Lineapelle Fair in Milan were back at their desks last week. Chinese tanners also returned to their offices on Tuesday after wrapping up their week-long “National Day” holidays. Korean tanners were closed last … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 14, 2019
The Hide Market Report – October 7, 2019
With China on holiday all last week as they celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Peoples Republic of China, and with Korea closed last Thursday for its National Foundation Day, things were slow for the U.S. hide market. U.S. raw and wet blue hide suppliers did put out their offering lists last week as they normally do on Mondays or Tuesdays. Some of those lists contained fewer selections while others showed more items. The pricing on those lists also varied from supplier to … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 7, 2019
The Hide Market Report – September 30, 2019
The United States hide market last week had many in the industry feeling like it was 2017 again, with tanners of all sizes entering the market and bidding on a wide variety of items. It feels like years since tanners were in the market looking to buy small packer and lower grading items. We can’t quite figure out, other than price, the exact reason why it is just now that these items are of interest since the prices have been cheap for a long time. Regardless of the reason, it … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 30, 2019
The Hide Market Report – September 23, 2019
Activity in the United States hide market picked up last week as tanners in Asia returned to their desks from various holidays across the Continent. The hide market had slowed in prior weeks with many returning home from the leather show in Shanghai and then the various Asian holidays. It was not surprising that the week started of a little subdued as tanners checked their positions and waited for packers and processors to put out their offer lists. By mid-week the market … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 23, 2019
The Hide Market Report – July 1, 2019
Activity in the U.S. hide market picked-up last week. U.S. hide suppliers’ offer lists that were sent out early in the week contained fewer selections at steady to slightly higher prices, and shipment periods indicated that suppliers sold ahead positions had improved. Steer hide selections were the items that suppliers had seen the most buyer interest and resulting sales of over the last couple of weeks. Consequently U.S. Steer hides were the selections that suppliers were most … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – July 1, 2019
The Hide Market Report – June 3, 2019
Last Monday was our Memorial Day national holiday here in the U.S.A. Therefore, most offices were closed until Tuesday which resulted in a slow start to the week for all business here. The market was full of stories about raw hides, wet blue, and crust leather being stacked up around the world. We have been told that, because hides have been historically cheap, Chinese tanners as well as tanners elsewhere have bought more hides than are required to fill their leather orders. This may be true … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – June 3, 2019
The Hide Market Report – May 27, 2019
If you were so inclined, you could have sold a lot of U.S. raw or wet blue Cattle hides last week. Of course, in order to do so you would have had to sell at prices that were lower by at least $2.00 per piece than last traded levels. There appeared to us to be a good number of U.S. raw and wet blue cattle hides traded by last week. Although, in order to put a good volume of sales on the book suppliers had to reduce prices. Steer hide prices took the biggest dip, but the Steer hide … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – May 27, 2019
