As everyone had expected, the U.S. hide market was stagnant last week. The Lunar New Year holiday was in full swing so all of Asia was out of the office for the week. As mentioned, this did not come as a surprise to anyone since we go through this week every year. In years past when leather demand was high and business in China was booming, you wouldn’t even realize there was a holiday with several tanners still needing to buy hides during the holiday. This year that was … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 11, 2019

The Hide Market Report – February 4, 2019
THE HIDE MARKET – February 4, 2019 The United States hide market was stagnant at best last week as much of Asia began preparing for the Lunar New Year holiday. There was some business that carried over from the prior week that was concluded early, but as the week progressed the market fell silent. On the supplier side offer lists were not very large and shipment periods were mostly out into March and April, but that did not stop a few tanners from passing bids well below the … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – February 4, 2019
The Hide Market Report – January 28, 2019
T Activity in the U.S. hide market slowed considerably last week as a result of the hide market coming off two to three weeks of busy activity. During that active period both tanners and U.S. hide producers were able to improve their positions. Tanners covered their immediate raw material needs while producers saw their sold ahead positions improve to comfortable levels. In the process U.S. Steer hide prices stabilized moving most selections to slightly higher price … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 28, 2019
The Hide Market Report – January 21, 2019
The interest in U.S. cattle hides that we had seen the prior couple of weeks continued with gusto into and throughout last week. Some U.S. hide suppliers were saying at the end of last week that it had been one of the best sales volumes wise that they had seen for some time. One would expect that sale prices would have gone up in the process and they did but only to a small degree, just not on all selections. In fact, the value of the Heavy Native Steer hide selection, due to … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 21, 2019
The Hide Market Report – January 14, 2019
As we anticipated, business in the U.S. hide market during last week’s New Year holiday week was even slower than the Christmas holiday week that preceded it. Again, last week, there were a good number of hides on U.S. sellers offering list, which has been the case for a number of weeks now. And, there was a good number of tanners in the market bidding, as has been the case for several weeks now. The trouble, as we saw it, was that the distance between asking and bid prices … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – January 14, 2019

The Hide Market Report – December 31, 2018
The fact that last week was a holiday-shortened one did not seem to affect the number of tanners in the market bidding for U.S. hides. The week began with U.S. hide sellers sending out offer lists on which they had priced most items basically steady with their prior week’s asks. The problem for suppliers was the fact that the bids from tanners were lower, on average, by $2.00 than the offering prices. However, as the week progressed a good number of tanners did raise their bid … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 31, 2018
The Hide Market Report – December 24, 2018
Tanners continued to bid on U.S. raw and wet blue hides last week. The volume of bids in the market was again large and the origin of those bids was well spread out among tanners and country of destination. A good number of those bids were at levels that were just too low to be entertained by sellers. Still by weeks end the feeling was that there had been a good round of business booked. To get their product moved U.S. Plump (Beef Type) Steer/Heifer hide sellers did have … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 24, 2018
The Hide Market Report – December 17, 2018
T If you ignore the prices paid for U.S. raw and wet blue hides traded last week, then you would have to call the week a good one for sellers. Again, as has been the case for the last three weeks or more, there were more than enough bids in the market to clear the offering lists that packers, processor and traders sent out last week. However, the devil in the details was price. To our knowledge, there were not any sales of raw or wet blue U.S. Steer or Cow hides at better … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 17, 2018
The Hide Market Report – December 5, 2018
Trading of U.S. raw and wet blue cattle hides slowed further last week. Most notable was the lack of interest found for the Heavy Native Steer hide selection. Due to the decline of demand from the auto upholstery tanners, the premium that Heavy Native Steer hides had previously enjoyed over the Branded Steer selections continues to narrow. This is not to say that the other Steer hide selection values were not under downward pressure, but just that pressure on the Branded Steer hide selections … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – December 5, 2018
