Last week started slowly, which was not surprising. For one thing- it was a holiday week, with last Thursday being our national Thanksgiving Day holiday here in the U.S. For another- the U.S. hide market had been limping along for several weeks. A big part of that decline in interest in U.S. raw and wet blue hides was due to a lack of product available for shipment and importation into China before January 1, 2019. That is the date when tariffs on U.S. hides entering China are threatened to … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 26, 2018

The Hide Market Report – November 19, 2018
It is safe to say that there were not enough hides sold in the U.S. market to cover a week’s production. Sales prices for U.S. Steer hides were mixed, but to our knowledge none of the Steer hide selections fetched higher prices. Butt Branded, Heavy Texas and Branded Steer hide prices were pretty much unchanged from their most recently sold levels. Heavy Native Steer hides on the other hand in our eyes slipped by $2.00 per piece. U.S. Cow hide values, like the various Branded Steer … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 19, 2018
The Hide Market Report – November 5, 2018
Last week’s hide market was pretty boring. There was some trading, but it was not notably voluminous nor did the transactions move hide values much. The U.S. Steer hides that were traded were done at either steady prices or, in the case of Heavy Native Steer hides, down slightly from last traded levels. The number of U.S. Cow hides that were traded last week was also limited, while the sales were concentrated on the Dairy Cow hide selection. The sale prices for those Dairy Cow hides were … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 5, 2018
The Hide Market Report – October 15, 2018
For what seems like several weeks now, the hide market has been in somewhat of a holding pattern. Last week was no different, with prices continuing to hold steady at current levels. China was back with plenty of interest, if suppliers could ship the goods in November for December arrival in China. Fears of a tariff increase in January are still very real and affecting Chinese tanners’ buying decisions. Currently, the Chinese government has not announced any further increase in tariffs, but … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 15, 2018

THE HIDE MARKET – OCTOBER 1, 2018 The U.S. hide market was rather quiet last week, but for the first time in a while this was not due solely to the hide market itself. It was a holiday in both Korea and Taiwan, the Lineapelle show in Milan, as well as the United States Hide, Skin, and Leather Association annual meeting in Chicago. This led to subdued buying interest for most of the week, as both sides of the buying equation found themselves out of the office for most of the week. There were … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 1, 2018
The Hide Market Report – September 24, 2018
U.S. Steer hide prices pretty much held their own last week, with some sales reported at slightly higher levels and others reported at marginally lower prices. At the same time, U.S. Cow hide suppliers struggled to hold their selling prices steady on Branded Cow hides, though they were able to get “up” money on their Dairy Cow hide productions. Small Packer, Renderer, and Number Three hides continued to be difficult to move. With the prices of the better-grading hides as low as they currently … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 24, 2018
The Hide Market Report – September 10, 2018
The post ACLE hangover lasted most of last week on both sides of the hide buying/selling equation. This could be attributed to a few suppliers still travelling to call on customers, but most likely it is just a continuation of slow leather demand. There were reports of suppliers lowering prices, but we could not confirm it, as some of the lists put out had prices up at least $1.00. This led to most tanners staying out of the market as they tried to make sense of the offers coming their way. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 10, 2018
The Hide Market Report – September 4, 2018
The All China Leather Fair is now behind us, so we can ask ourselves what did we come away with as far as knowledge about where the leather business and hide market are headed this fall? Well, we can not say we know much more than we did prior to the ACLE. Reports from the show, and immediately after, varied depending who you spoke with. Some of the U.S. hide suppliers saw the show as fairly-well attended and active, others did not think either was the case. The variance in these perceptions … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 4, 2018
The Hide Market Report – August 13, 2018
There was a good bit of activity int the U.S. hide market last week. Supplier’s offer lists were less populated than they had been in some time and the asking prices on those lists were steady or higher than last offerings. Also, the shipment periods on most of the offerings were pushed out by a month on average from the prior week’s offer lists. As the week moved on, a sizable number of Steer hides appeared to have been sold at prices that were steady to slightly higher than last traded … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – August 13, 2018
The Hide Market Report – August 6, 2018
Things really started slowly for the U.S. hide market last week. U.S. raw and wet blue hide suppliers, for the most part, all raised their asking prices on the products that they offered. Coming off what appeared to be two good weeks of sales, many suppliers had the feeling/hope that maybe the long downward price trend had finally come to an end and that hide prices had bottomed. The week started with a sizable number of tanners bidding, and, as has been the case for some time now, those … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – August 6, 2018
