Sale prices for all the U.S. Big Packer steer hide selections firmed up last week as tanner interest for U.S. steer hides from the prior week carried over into last week. As last week progressed it became clear that Asian tanners were entering the market to pick up raw material that was priced at levels that were down by as much as 40 percent, on steer hides, from where they were the first of this year. The depth of last week’s demand for U.S. steer hides was very encouraging for suppliers and … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – July 30, 2018

The Hide Market Report – July 23, 2018
Prices for the Steer hide selections again moved lower by a couple of dollars per piece. There were also some slightly lower-priced sales reported a few of the Cow hide selections. But, really, the current market price for many Cow hide selections, like Southwestern Brand Cow hides, are so low that they have no room to move lower. There is a price point where it does not pay to process certain hide selections and it is more economical to render them or take them to the land fill. We have … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – July 23, 2018
The Hide Market Report – July 16, 2018
U.S. raw and wet blue cattle hide prices continued their decline last week, with Steer hide values declining by $1.00 to $2,00 per piece and U.S. Cow hide prices by between $.50 to $1.00 per piece. Those price spreads on the individual selections were dependent on weight range and origin. Our opinion is that a decent number of hides traded last week, although the consensus of the trade was that raw and wet blue hide sales fell below production for the week. It appeared that many of the hides … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – July 16, 2018
The Hide Market Report – July 2, 2018
Cattle slaughter in the U.S. moved lower last week, and we expect this trend to continue as we move through the heat of the summer in the northern hemisphere over the next 2 months. From our view point, it appeared that the U.S. Steer hide suppliers had a good week, sales-wise. But, it is debatable as to whether sellers moved a week’s production or not. Sale prices for all the Steer and Heifer selections were down from the prior week’s levels in the range of $2.00 to $3.00 per piece. Sale … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – July 2, 2018
The Hide Market Report – June 25, 2018
Activity in the U.S. Cattle hide market was almost nonexistent the first few days of last week. By the time we got to Thursday, it was apparent that the week was not going to be a big one for the U.S. hide market. Part of that was, for sure, the fact that both China and Taiwan were closed on Monday enjoying their “Dragon Boat Festival” public holiday. As the week progressed, it seemed that all posturing and media reporting on the possibility of a trade war and impending tariffs seemed to have … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – June 25, 2018
The Hide Market Report – June 11, 2018
The fact that last week was shortened by a holiday here in the U.S.A. did not help the Hide Market. What the market needed was a robust round of business, but that did not happen. Most of the U.S. hide suppliers lowered their asking prices to get their offers more in line with market prices. Tanners responded with bids aggressively lower than the adjusted asked prices. By week’s end, there was a fair amount of business put together and it was debatable as to whether sales matched the week’s … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – June 11, 2018

The Hide Market Report – May 21, 2018
Nothing new for the U.S Steer hide market last week, as it repeated its weekly trend. The Heavy Native Steer hide selection stayed basically steady, while all the branded Steer selections were down anywhere from $1.00 to $2.00 per piece FOB plant basis. The lack in demand, which is still blamed on reduced footwear orders, was the number one reason for the continued decline in U.S. hide prices. U.S. Cow hides did not fair much better than their Steer hide brethren, as we estimate Cows … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – May 21, 2018
The Hide Market Report – April 30, 2018
The gradual erosion of U.S. Steer hides prices continued last week, with most selections off between $1.00 to $2.00 per piece. U.S. Cow hide values, on the other hand, were steady to a maximum $1.00 higher per piece. The Heavy Native Steer hide selection was an anomaly, as its value remained unchanged and continues to be buoyed by demand for upholstery leathers. The Branded Steer hide selections all declined to one degree or another. Those declines in the Branded Steer hide selections are … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – April 30, 2018

THE HIDE MARKET – APRIL 23, 2018 U.S. Raw and Wet Blue Steer hide suppliers lowered the prices they would accept last week to move product. Those prices were reported at levels down between $1.00 to $2.00 per pieces on the Branded Steer hide selections and, depending on who you talked to, steady to down $1.00 for the Heavy Native Steer hide. According to tanners, the main reason for the weakness in the Branded Steer selections was a lack of shoe orders. At the same time, the continued demand … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – April 23, 2018
