Trading of U.S. Steer hides was active last week, while the ability of U.S. suppliers to move their Cow hide productions remained limited. Sales prices improved for Steer hides on some selections, namely Heavy Native Steers and Butt Branded Steers, while other selections, like Branded Steer hides, saw their values remain unchanged. Cow hide prices remained under pressure, except for certain Cow selections from premium origins. The pressure on the Cow hide prices were, as we understand it, the … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – November 6, 2017

The Hide Market Report – October 30, 2017
Uneventful, is how we would describe last week for the U.S. Hide Market. There was a limited amount of business put together by U.S raw hide and wet blue sellers and their customers. Sale prices for the Steer hides that were traded last week were steady with what was paid for the same selections the prior week. There was a Branded Heifer sale and a few other sales that were reported at lower levels. Those sales prices are considered by most to be corrections to the real marketable level as … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 30, 2017
The Hide Market Report – October 23, 2017
Things were more firm for the U.S. hide market last week. Suppliers started the week by putting higher prices on the Raw and Wet Blue hides that they offered. Tanners, in turn, started last week bidding at levels that were lower or steady with the previous week’s contracted prices. By Thursday & Friday, both sides started to come together, and a decent amount of business was booked at prices steady or a little higher than the week prior. The items that obtained price improvements were … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 23, 2017
The Hide Market Report – October 16, 2017
Last week showed signs that demand for U.S. raw and wet blue hides may be on the upswing. There were more tanners bidding last week, and suppliers recorded a decent amount of sales. Sales price for U.S. Steer hides were basically steady with those of booked over the last few weeks. However, there were a few sales of both Steer and Heifer hides reported at prices up $1.00 per piece from their most recent levels. Those reports made U.S. Steer hide suppliers feel that the market for their … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 16, 2017
The Hide Market Report – October 9, 2017
Last week was more of the same for the U.S. hide market. Sales price for U.S. Steer hides that were steady with those of booked over the last few weeks. But, the number of Steer hides sold may well have fallen short of week’s production. With most of the buying power in Asia out on Autumn holidays, the U.S. market was quite subdued all week. In addition to the holidays in Asia, the leather fair in Milan, Italy also pulled some major U.S. suppliers away from their desks and limited sales. … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 9, 2017
The Hide Market Report – October 2, 2017
The "United States Hide Skin and Leather Association" held its Annual Meeting in Chicago last Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting was well attended with most of the companies that market U.S.A. raw and wet blue hides being represented at the gathering. The meeting’s schedule of events, and the presentations by the invited speakers were all well accepted by the attendees. One might have thought that with the prolonged weakness in the U.S. hide market that has slowly brought down the value of … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – October 2, 2017
The Hide Market Report – September 25, 2017
None of the U.S. cattle hide selections rose in value last week. The U.S. Plump Steer hide selection’s sale prices were steady with the prior week’s levels, or down by a maximum of $1.00 per piece. The U.S. Dairy Cow hides were the only U.S. Cow hide selection to trade at a higher level last week, as the value of both Native and Branded Plump Cows dropped by as much as $1.00, depending on the origin. Many of the U.S. hide suppliers reported they were able to market a good number of raw and … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 25, 2017
The Hide Market Report – September 18, 2017
Last week seemed to be uneventful for the U.S. cattle hide market. The week came and went with a fair amount of business being put together by U.S. raw hide and wet blue suppliers and their customers. We say fair amount of sales being consummated because we do not believe that sales volume equaled production. We got the impression that tanners using U.S. Cow hide selections were less active buyers last week than those tanners using U.S. Steer hide selections. Coming out of the prior National … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 18, 2017

THE HIDE MARKET – SEPTEMBER 11, 2017 Coming out of the lackluster All China Leather Exhibition the week prior, suppliers were hoping to come home to orders that they might be able to put on the books. Many of those bids were in fact there for suppliers, but the prices bid were well below what any supplier would consider the market. Many felt that those bids were mainly just speculation by tanners hoping to buy something well below the market. We believe that most suppliers tried as best they … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 11, 2017
The Hide Market Report – September 5, 2017
The All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) has come and gone, but it did not appear to have given us the answer we were looking for as to which direction the U.S.A. hide prices will be heading moving into the fall. The general feeling was that there were fewer attendees at this year’s show than last year’s edition. There were of course some productive meetings for those marketing U.S. hides, and some sales reported to have been booked. Transaction prices in our opinion were mainly at steady … [Read more...] about The Hide Market Report – September 5, 2017
